This is a book in my top three for the Kings & Queens series. Who doesn't love a great ghost story, a hero who saves the day, and a passionate romance?

Celine’s lips twitched, and she bit the inside of her cheek. The exhaustion and nausea hadn’t ceased since last Friday, after attempting communication with Mabel’s dead husband. Dark-circled, red-rimmed eyes stared back from the bathroom mirror. She couldn’t continue to live on crackers and soda.
Bumps in the night, doors slamming, and moans kept her awake. A few sporadic naps in the backyard gazebo were the only reason she still functioned. If she could afford to move, she would, but it wasn’t possible. It required every penny she earned to pay for this house. She should sell it and relocate to a new city. Tomorrow, a call to a realtor was first on her list. With no family to help, she had no other choice.
She grabbed the tube of toothpaste off the bathroom counter and squeezed. The green, gooey substance dropped on the bathroom counter in a blob, slid off, and splattered onto the tiled floors.
Her eyes rolled to the ceiling, and she released a deep sigh just as the bathroom door slammed shut behind her. Her body jerked before she swiveled with annoyance, dropping her toothbrush in the sink. No one else was in the house, and the doors were locked. The windows were all closed and secured except for the one in her bathroom, but even the warm night air couldn’t chase the chill in the house away.
Bare feet hesitantly slid across the tile toward the door, and her shoulders straightened. There was no way a demon was going to run her out of her home, but the hair standing at attention on the back of her neck said something else. It spoke of her fear and frustration at trying to fight something she couldn’t see, an entity terrorizing her.
Thunder crashed outside just as her hand reached for the doorknob, and she quickly jerked back. Her gaze darted to the window when it vibrated and dropped with a loud bang. The glass pane shattered into jagged pieces inside her bathtub.
Exhausted, annoyed, and at the end of her rope, she was sick of whatever haunted her. Refusing to cower, Celine jerked the bathroom door open and crossed the threshold into her bedroom. Her jaw clenched in anger at finding her things on the carpet. Dresser drawers were jerked out of their places and tossed about the room. The comforter and sheets were in tatters, her clothes in messy piles, and the picture frames all shattered.
The only thing remaining upright was a lamp in the corner. Celine faced it when the lightbulb flickered. A strong breeze moved through the room, and lightning flashed outside the bedroom window. A demon’s moan echoed off the walls, followed by a hiss.
This was war, and the word defeat wasn’t part of her vocabulary.
She reached for her black tourmaline necklace as a fog-like presence formed. The stone heated against her palm. Rain pelted the side of the house in a torrential downpour, the storm finally unleashing its fury.
A white flash lit the room, revealing the demon. Solid black in form, its head tilted with a sinister smirk on its mouth. Hollowed eyes glared at her, and its jagged teeth snapped together. “Celine,” it whispered.
The house rattled with the next clap of thunder, and she jumped. Her breath became ragged, her heart roared in her ears, and cold sweat covered her body. The blood in her veins trickled to a crawl, and her entire body shivered with terror.
Celine gripped her stone tighter, and her chin rose in defiance. This demon wouldn’t possess her body, but when the lightning flashed again, it wasn’t the demon with sharp teeth, but the sweet smile of her deceased mother. “Mom?” she asked in confusion.
“There’s a time to fight and a time to run, Celine. You’ve opened a portal, and I can’t close it from this side. Your harnesser waits for you. Get out of the house now!”
Celine shook her head and lifted her hand just as the corporeal body of her mother vibrated, the demon’s face merging with hers. It was as if they shared the same skin. Her mother’s neck tilted at an abnormal angle, and visible tremors rattled her entire body. The demon screeched and fought as her mother struggled to bind it.
Blue eyes, like her own, bore into her soul. “Run now!”
